You may or may not need these. They are here for reference in case anyone gets confused. If you have any questions or comments that require my attention please inbox me.
Blue Booking: One or a few of the players describing activities of their characters in written form, outside of the role-playing session, creating a sort of ongoing character history and resolving actions that don’t involve the rest of the group.
Munchkin: An immature player, especially one who is selfishly focused on dominating play, often by seeking to circumvent the normal limitations placed on characters.
Alternative Universe (AU): This is a term for a universe that deliberately deviates from the canon. Can be a minor deviation, or a large one. Or something in between.
Backchannel(ing): The practice of chatting and plotting in private e-mail, messages or IM, instead of public view on the forum.
Crack: Something that is intentionally humorous or parody in nature. Not to be taken seriously.
Fade to Black: The ending of a scene as written by the players, but when IC action is presumed to continue – sometimes the thread picks up again after a certain point. Is most generally used when characters are about to have sex, although it can be used for other reasons.
Auto Hitting: This describes a fighting action whereby a character is attacking another character and ASSUMES to have hit them without the other characters response being considered.
Godmoding (godmoding, moding, godding etc.): Where a character does something they are not capable of/do not have permission to do to another character, e.g. moving another character (without actual physical intervention by the godmoding character) by stating they are somewhere they are not without the other player's permission. Also: "God Modding" is in essence when someone’s character has the ability to do practically anything without limits or boundaries. And example is when they simply cannot be harmed by any and all means other RP-ers try. It can be killing or injuring a character without the player's express permission. It can be when they simply can’t be hit and dodge all attacks or anything for this matter aimed at them. It can also be using other characters that other people RP with. In other words, if you do not RP as Legolas, then you cannot have Legolas say anything, or do anything, without the player's express permission. The absolute worst is when they make out another character to be what they’re not, just to make their own character seem superior. They make others seem weak, screaming for help, when they’ve made it quite clear about their advantages and strengths. This is called power-play. It’s a strain of God-Modding, but instead of just being irritating, it’s offensive to boot.
In Character (IC): Anything that occurs in/relates to what happens in the game (to/by the characters).
Out of Character (OOC): Usually this is idle praddle done by the Role-Player and not the actual character talking.
Metagaming: Bringing OOC knowledge into an IC situation, e.g. knowing that a character really likes ice cream, when it has never been mentioned, and your character has no basis for knowing this fact.
Non-Joined Character (NJC): A character that is more fully developed than an NPC, but belongs to one player and is most likely recurring for a plot/specific events. Examples include spouses and children of PCs, who make appearances but are not the focus.
Non-Player Character (NPC): A character that is not important to be created, able to be used by any player, and generally only for a situation e.g. the waitress serving a group at dinner, the student a person bumps into while waiting in line.
Retcon: Short for 'retroactive continuity'. This refers to a player (or players) OOCly backtracking and erasing plots from the IC continuity as if they had never happened.
Wangst: When angst goes bad: either overboard in its severity (as though things were just added for the 'drama factor') - 'My father ate my bunny rabbit because he didn't like me!' - and/or is the continual focus of the character (every thread is designed to showcase the horror of this character's past). There is no attempt to 'deal with' their problems, or any sign of 'improvement' or character development beyond things simply getting worse. While some people do wangst over things, it is usually limited to a specific period of time, before they move onto the next stage (whatever that may be).
GM: (Abbreviation for "Game Moderator") The individual acting as referee and scene-setter in a game.
Strict RP - Usually one might see this in a channel topic. This means that the channel will not accept very much in the way of Out Of Character (OOC) statements. So if you walk in there talking about your latest computer upgrade, expect to be warned, cautioned and/or kicked.
KZ - Kill Zone: Any channel that is designated a KZ is a place where your character can be killed.
NKZ - No Kill Zone: This is another designation for rules of a channel. If the channel is a No Kill Zone (NKZ) no characters are allowed to be killed there. It is against the channel's rules of RP to claim that you have fought and actually killed someone whilst within this channel. These channels often do not have conflicts within them since they are widely thought to be pointless.
FFRP - Free Form RolePlay: This term specifically describes a particular type of RolePlay. That being a game that is designed, run and operated on the go by a group of people playing in a channel or set of channels. Free form meaning that they stick to a certain group of GENERAL rules, but do not have particular statistics or specific rules. Roleplay in such a situation is usually free and directed by the imagination of the players.
