It was about mid-evening, the sun just beginning to go down, the city streets calming some as the rush hour began to pass. This young man wasn’t needed home quite yet so he decided to just idly pass the time by walking through the streets with only his thoughts to keep him company. The air was cool, so far his v-neck black T-shirt and skinny jeans had been enough to keep the chill out but chances are the temperature was sure to drop some more come night fall. Oh well. He’ll manage. His dark eyes took in the passing people, the store windows, the familiar signs… but one smell in particular called his attention. Coffee? He turned his head and sure enough there was the familiar green and white and the mermaid face that brought it all together. Starbucks. With a light shrug and a hand running through his hair he thought why not and let himself inside. He never really considered this to be one of his favorite places but the second he stepped foot across the threshold he was met with that warm lingering air and rich scent that was just overall…..comforting. Perhaps that’s why he found himself turning up here more and more…. He definitely had no problem with their coffee that’s for sure. And so, willing to kill more time and just see where the evening take him, he ordered a cup, and began to wonder maybe it was time to just accept the fact he liked coming here.
Maybe it was the new school, he'd finally gotten fully adjusted to, or the new people he met everyday or maybe all the caffeine pumping through his veins and causing his heart to race and his mind, thoughts and all, to kick into hyper drive, but WOW all the energy he had. He could hardly concentrate on study guide in front of him. His head was down, blonde hair kept out of his face by his right hand, in his left was a pencil; poised for work, but doing nothing but making odd little doodles in the margins of his paper, while his knee bounced up and down; his whole body was screaming at him to get up and move or SOMETHING.
Instead of doing anything work or movement related he took another drink of coffee.. or he would have if there had been any coffee left.
'Third cups' the charm~'
He all to willingly popped up out of his seat, depositing his empty cup in the garbage, turned, and...
"Whoa... Sorry." He leaned back out of the guy he'd about collided with's space, smiling apologetically. Somehow a faint blush rose in his cheeks and he had to look away promptly, hazel brown eyes searching for something to look at. "Uh... Heh.. My bad." backing up now he fidgeted with one of his many leather wristbands, suddenly feeling all to aware of style of his clothes... At least he'd not over pinked himself today... okay so his shirt was pink, but it had the Pink Panther on it! And at least his jeans were black... his converse though... damn it pink again.
'Distraction! YES Distract him.'
"Nice shirt." He smiled an awkward crooked smile flipping his hair out of his eyes.
'I really need to cut my hair and damn it I look like a giant pink monster in comparison to him. Fuck my fashion boldness. OH GOD did that ever sound gay.. I mean I am... but.. I don't have to sound gay... Fuck........ He probably thinks I'm a stalker from the way I'm staring at him. GET IT TOGETHER SPENCE. Don't let him out man you.'
Kyosuke blinked in surprise, taking a step back to avoid collision also. The guy had apologized which was nice but it didn’t take long before he noticed his fidgeting. Was he making him uncomfortable…? This struck a sort of funny and amused chord within Kyosuke, causing him to let out a soft smile.
“It’s okay. Could’ve been a lot worse…”
Okay yes. The kid was obviously nervous but he was really cute about it… Kyosuke’s eyes tore from the other’s face though and glanced down to his own shirt as the compliment was made. “What? Oh thanks…” His turn to be the slightest bit awkward now. Fish for something… fish for something….
“I like your converse…” Well fuck. This was going downhill fast. Right! Name. Another sheepish smile, “I’m Kyosuke by the way…”
Okay so maybe he was just being paranoid and his insecurities were a fictional response from his sugar loaded, or more likely, addled, brain.
'Wow I'm awwkkkkaaarrrddd aassss ffuuucckkkk OTL'
Blinking at the rather stunning smile, soft as it was, he could feel his face heating up even more. More a few seconds during the silence he imagined all the girls, and guys too no doubt, that were probably attracted to him just because there was a chance at seeing a smile like that.
'Like... what the hell. How does anyone handle having a face like that??? He's lucky teens and tweens a like aren't breaking down his door.'
Right back to the present! Stop zoning out he'll think you're a freak. Wait.. a name?
'Kyosuke...'
Trying his best not to look like a crack addict with all his fidgeting and getting distracted, coffee is NOT good for his ADHD ya know, he held out his hand to shake. "I'm Spencer. Nice to meet you~"
He took the other’s hand with little to no hesitation, another smile adding a sort of irresistible genuineness to his words, “Likewise. I’m just glad you didn’t actually bump into me. Not a big fan of third degree burns.”
He couldn’t help it though okay? The guy was adorable.
‘Kinda weird in a cute kinda way with blonde hair and light eyes…? Yeah I’m screwed. Done at hello~’
His dark eyes gazed passed Spencer a moment, sweeping across a table not far from where they stood. Strewn papers, a pencil or two… A realization set in and his eyes swung back to meet his, “Oh!”
‘Hey his eyes are hazel…. I mean! Kyosuke Stop!’
“Were you in the middle of something….? Sorry…”
"You're in luck. It's empty~" he smiled, more like was cheesing, running a hand back through his hair... that he hadn't spiked today...
'You really need to get a grip Spence...'
Tall, dark eyes, hair, clothes. Had he bumped into the rare mysterious type? Interesting... He wasn't very often Spencer got socially awkward, but recent events... and then almost having a very close meeting with.. Kyosuke... had jumbled his already frantic thoughts.
Glancing back over to the table he'd been sitting at he laughed lightly. "It's not like I was getting anywhere anyway and it's not due for another two days~ I'm not worried about it."
Okay so he needed to memorize everything in less than 30 hours, but he could always study. He couldn't always, however, meet a Kyosuke.
"So... have time to sit and waste with me?" he managed a slightly bashful, crooked smile, eyes twinkling from behind the blonde bangs once again hanging in his face.
That smile…. And the way his hair lightly fell into those soft bright eyes… he was reeling him more and more with each passing moment without even trying. Like this pull on his heart strings with each sweet smile. And to think he has just come in here on a mere whim… He was glad that if he had to waste time anywhere that it was with this Spencer kid. ‘Oh yeah. Starbucks? It’s official. One of my favorite places now.’
And then the invitation came, greeted first with a tilted and amused smile of his own.
“I wouldn’t exactly call it time wasted but yeah I don’t mind sticking around for a while. I have no where else I have to be.”
"I'll try to... clear some space..." he laughed at himself, swatting his hair out of his face. Starbucks had always been one of his favorite spots, well... next to Duncan Donuts and Le Cafe Noir back home--erm... that place he thought was home...
He quickly started making neat little stacks of all the papers then shoved them into their individual folders with practiced ease; helping his father with filing gym memberships and school papers was good for learning organization skill. With in a few seconds he had the table cleared off.
"So.. do you come here often?" having just found the place today he was hoping he'd see more of Kyosuke here.
Okay Kyosuke had to admit, he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t somewhat impressed by Spencer’s quick and easy sense of organization. He let a small thanks slip by before settling himself into a chair.
He even found himself laughing lightly at the cliche question, “Well that sounds familiar~ But yeah as much as I’d hate to admit it I do. It’s a nice quiet place to come and just….clear my head when I don’t feel like being home….”
‘Which is often….’
Kyosuke shook his head, pushing the thought back. It’s not even that bad. He just….wants Spencer to be his full attention right now. “So how about you? I’ve never seen you around before but I guess that doesn’t really mean much…”
Settling into a seat of his own across from Kyosuke, backpack slung over the back of the chair he leaned his elbows on the table; giving his new friend his full attention.
"I'm new. I moved in a few months ago but I'm just now getting to explore. I love coffee shops so I couldn't resist coming in." He left the hows and why's of his move alone for the moment. No reason putting a damper on this meeting so soon. "New house and school, new people and places."
He couldn't say he didn't like it here, but the reason for leaving his hole in the wall hometown could've been better. Like how he moved around a lot because of his dad being Military. That made the constant jumping from place to place worth it. At least before his dad got shipped to Iraq.
So the guy was new huh? And he liked coffee shops? Well looks like Kyosuke just found a new reason and motivation for coming here more often. Hm…..maybe he could even convince him to let him show him around some? ‘Don’t get ahead of yourself Kyosuke. You’ve only known him five minutes…’
“Tch,” another tilted smile of amusement between sips of his own coffee he had yet to touch. A tinge colder than it could have been but oh well. “You make it sound so easy though. As if it’s no big deal…”
He didn’t bother to ask the how and why for the other’s move. The reason being didn’t even cross his mind as something to ask. Moves were common. The reasons being usually unimportant. He tilted his head just slightly as he rose his eyes to Spencer’s, “But how’re you getting along so far though?”
"Well my dad's a Vet. So we used to move around a lot. I'm pretty used to it." He leaned in further, resting his chin on his hand. "I guess I'm not adjusting as quickly as before because the last place I lived I had liked a lot." Until they all decided to feed me to the dogs and spread nasty rumors and...
He sighed and let his leg start bumping repeatedly into the table leg, not really paying attention to his caffeine high. If only there were more Kyosuke's around... And he caught himself staring again. How could he not stare with this Adonis right in front of him. Not like there was anything more attractive to distract him.
'DID I REALLY JUST THINK THAT???! SPENCER!! Get. A. Grip. He's a straight arrow. Fuck I'm hopeless ...'
"How about you? How long have you been here?"
Kyosuke nodded as Spencer gave his explanation. Made a lot of sense. I mean who /wouldn’t/ miss the life they had to leave behind? Especially if it was a good one. He just hoped that Spencer would like this place just as much. You don’t gain anything from dwelling on the past.
He lifted his shoulders in a light shrug at Spencer’s question. “All my life I guess as boring as that sounds. I like to be out and about rather than being stuck at home. I mean don’t get me wrong or anything but my dad can be kinda…..” His eyes flickered to a corner of the room as he tried to find the right words.
He found none. So he turned his eyes back, closing them as he let out another smile.
“Let’s just say there’s a lot of things he doesn't really understand and can’t come to terms with.”
